Aggregates are widely used in the construction industry, with a range of types available that can be used for various applications. Of course, as with most industries, adopting sustainable practices and solutions is becoming increasingly paramount in the construction industry.
As such, recycled aggregates are the way forward. Read on as we discuss the different types of recycled aggregates we offer here at Bedrock Plant Hire Ltd, along with what their uses may include.
Recycled aggregates, as their name suggests, are reprocessed aggregates that are derived from demolition or construction waste, rather than sourced directly from natural sources.
They are a much more sustainable alternative to virgin aggregates, which deplete already dwindling natural resources. On top of that, the energy used and emissions produced as a result of mining said materials have even more of a negative impact on the environment.
In comparison, recycled aggregates are reprocessing existing materials, which produces significantly less emissions and avoids the need for fresh resources to be depleted. Furthermore, they also reduce the amount of construction waste that goes into landfills, which is yet another factor that makes them so sustainable and favourable.
Made using finely grounded and often filtered concrete waste, our concrete sand is a sustainable alternative to using natural sand or concrete sand that has been freshly mined. It’s predominantly used in concrete or mortar mixtures, although it can also be used to lay under block or patio pavings, as it packs well together and won’t wash out as easily as finer sands might.
Recycled sand can be derived from a variety of sources, such as glass, repurposed sand or even other finely-grounded construction waste materials. It goes through a screening process in order to remove any impurities and ensure uniformity before it’s then ready for reuse.
Soft sand is an ideal choice to incorporate into bricklaying mortar thanks to its small grains.
In comparison, sharp sand is heavier and grittier, featuring a larger grain size than soft sand as it has not been as finely milled. As such, its use is better suited for making cement or screed, since its angular particles are able to bond together better and provide more strength when dry.
Concrete can be crushed to make gravel of varying sizes, depending on the required applications, which could include (but isn’t limited to):
- Use in concrete mix
- Landscaping
- Pavements
- Base for drainage
Here at Bedrock Plant Hire Ltd, our recycled gravel aggregates come available in the following sizes:
- 4-10mm
- 10-20mm
- 20-40mm
